UK tech tsar warns of AI cyber threat to NHS

Ian Hogarth, chair of the UK government’s “Frontier AI” task force, warned that artificial intelligence could potentially be used to hack the NHS or carry out a “biological attack”. The task force, which has £100mn funding for independent AI safety research, will focus on global collaboration to tackle these risks. Hogarth compared the threat level to the Covid-19 pandemic and the WannaCry ransomware attack in 2017. He also announced AI pioneer Yoshua Bengio and GCHQ director Anne Keast-Butler as new members of the task force’s advisory board.
