Ian Hogarth, chair of the UK government’s “Frontier AI” task force, warned that artificial intelligence could potentially be used to hack the NHS or carry out a “biological attack”. The task force, which has £100mn funding for independent AI safety research, will focus on global collaboration to tackle these risks. Hogarth compared the threat level to the Covid-19 pandemic and the WannaCry ransomware attack in 2017. He also announced AI pioneer Yoshua Bengio and GCHQ director Anne Keast-Butler as new members of the task force’s advisory board.
