Sri Lanka’s Lanka Government Cloud (LGC) has been hit by a ransomware attack which started on 26 August, impacting all 5,000 email users. An investigation has been launched by the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team and Coordination Center (CERT|CC) to determine the source of the attack. LGC services were swiftly restored, but there has been significant permanent data loss. CEO Mahesh Perera admitted the system was using outdated software which made it vulnerable.

Stop blaming maintainers for open source risks
Open source leaders are pushing for permanent government financing to maintain open source projects. They argue that as government oversight is vital to the national
