Is This Premenstrual Condition a Mental Illness or Oppression?

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a controversial diagnosis that represents emotional changes and physical symptoms affecting some women before their period. While some critics fear the diagnosis adds to the oppression of women and could be used to dismiss women’s experiences, others find it validating. Although not widely understood, treatments like SSRIs can prove effective for PMDD. Bioethicist Tamara Kayali Browne explains many societal factors also contribute to premenstrual distress, suggesting a more holistic approach be taken.
