IBM Returns To the Facial Recognition Market

IBM has signed a $69.8m contract with the UK government to develop a biometric platform including facial recognition for immigration and law enforcement. This follows the company’s announcement in 2020 that it would not offer general-purpose facial recognition due to concerns around racial profiling and human rights violations. IBM stated that the biometric platform would not be used for mass surveillance, but campaigners argue the move contradicts the company’s previous commitment.
