Going nowhere fast: How specialist wait times impact primary care practitioners

The lengthy wait times experienced by Canadians for specialist medical referrals are highly problematic and are inciting stress for primary care providers (PCPs), according to research from Dr Emily G Marshall of the Dalhousie Department of Family Medicine. Her study shows PCPs often work outside their scope as they attempt to manage patients while they wait for specialist appointments, leading to job dissatisfaction and burnout.
