Cozy Images of Plush Toys and Blankets Counter Messaging on Safe Infant Sleep

Pediatric cardiologist Samuel Hanke tragically lost his infant son, Charlie, to accidental suffocation while he was sleeping in his arms. In response, he and his wife Maura created Charlie’s Kids, a non-profit promoting safe sleep practices for infants to prevent similar tragedies. Nationwide organizations and initiatives continue to raise awareness about safe sleep, including avoiding blankets, soft toys, and bed sharing. Despite progress, accidental suffocation and strangulation remain persistent issues, contributing to approximately 20-25 infant deaths per 100,000 live births annually in the US.
